John Lewis yesterday opened its new £35m Birmingham department store, which anchors the Grand Central retail development above New Street Station.

The store spans 250,000sqft and is the largest opened by the retailer in over four years. Managing director Andy Street said the store demonstrates its commitment to the high street and physical shops.

“Birmingham is a city which we have wanted to be a part of for many years and the New Street Station and Grand Central development offered us the perfect opportunity to make this a reality,” he said.

“Our new Birmingham regional flagship shop is a bold expression of the very best of John Lewis in 2015 and it is particularly exciting that customers will be able to step directly from New Street Station into four floors of inspiring fashion, home and technology.”

John Lewis said today that sales in the seven days to 19th September across the chain were up by 6 per cent to £78.7m. Home sales were up 3.2 per cent.
