Flooring and beds franchise retailer United Carpets says its small format high street stores are performing well and it may open a few more in the next year.

The franchise retailer said it has tested the format with centrally located stores that provided samples of the flooring ranges it offered but without carrying the same stock levels as traditional stores.

It currently has six small format stores and said it anticipates opening a few more during the course of 2015.

United released details of it high street store plan together with it interim results. Half year network sales — including revenue from its franchisees — declined 8.6 per cent to £25.6m, with the chain closing one store and relocating another in the six months to end September.

Like-for-like sales rose 0.3 per cent, while pre-tax profits jumped 18 per cent to £534k.

In the period since, United has opened stores in Birkenhead and Blackburn and is now trading from 60 stores, of which 48 are run by franchisees.
