Furniture and lighting retail sales in Ireland climbed double-digit for a fifth consecutive month in December as traders ended 2015 in positive fashion.

Official retail sales figures from the Central Statistics Office put furniture and lighting category value growth at 13.3 per cent in the final month of 2015.

The amount spent on furniture has been over 10 per cent higher year-on-year for each of the past five months, with the overall growth run stretching a further month to six.

Volume growth — the quantity of goods bought — was up even higher, at +18.9 per cent in December, with the difference reflecting deflation across the big-ticket category.

Total Irish retail sales increased by 3.5 per cent by value in November against a year earlier, the CSO said, and 6.3 per cent by volume.
