Kitchens giant Howdens will enter the German market this year as it looks to build on record sales and profits racked up in 2015.

The manufacturer and distributor, which galvanises small builders to sell to consumers on its behalf, says its first German depot will be added to with another five in northern France, taking the total there into double figures.

Howdens also entered the Dutch market with its first Netherlands depot, in Amsterdam, last year, having launched in Belgium late 2014.

CEO Matthew Ingle said the company was keen to “learn about different markets” but remained committed to expanding in the UK.

He said there was scope for 800 UK depots for the kitchen and joinery business, with 30 more to open here in 2016, on top of the 30 opened last year. It currently has 619 UK depots.

Howdens’ group revenue was up 11.9 per cent to £1.22bn with pre-tax profit up by 16.3 per cent to £219.6m. Mr Ingle said UK UK depot revenue in the first two periods of 2016 rose by 7.1 per cent.
