Furniture and lighting sales trended up in high single-digits for Irish retailers in January as the new year continued along the same vein as 2015.

The value of sales in the category climbed 7.6 per cent against January 2015 as Irish consumers made the most of attractive prices.

Furniture category volumes — the amount bought — rose 12.3 per cent according to the official data from Ireland’s Central Statistics Office.

It was a strong month for Irish retail overall, with total sales up by 8.9 per cent by value year-on-year and 10.3 per cent by volume.

Cars, bars, clothing, footwear and textiles as well as department store retailers were among those reporting high growth.
