Kaymed UK was named Bed Manufacturer of the Year at the Bed Industry Awards last night, with Mattress Online and Sussex Beds winning the retail categories.

Dreams, the national beds retailer, picked up the new Judges Choice award, with Vitafoam winning the Bed Component Supplier of the Year category.

The winners were named at the close of the NBF Bed Show Gala Dinner, which took place at the end of the first day of the seventh annual Bed Show at the Telford International Centre.

The Bed Industry Awards were judged by Richard de Melim, Keely Portway, Paul Farley and Andrew Kidd — editors of The Furnishing Report, Cabinet Maker, Furniture News and Interiors Monthly respectively — along with Greenwood Retail managing director Bernard Eaton.

In a category where sales growth was abundant across the entries, Kaymed UK won the manufacturer’s award for the depth of its improvement over the reviewed period, but also because it did so across a range of retail customers. It also successfully defended itself against a rival’s claim of patent infringement.

Mattress Online scooped the £5 million and over turnover retail category, thanks to the demonstrable top and bottom line growth achieved, for increasing average order values and investing in the business during the reviewed period.

A turnaround story won the £5 million and under turnover retail category with judges impressed by how Hailsham based Sussex Beds conveyed how they had changed strategy to turn a losing formula into a winning one.

Bed manufacturers’ testimonials were fundamental in the judges’ decision to award the components supplier of the year award to Vitafoam, which also invested heavily to bring benefits and innovation during the qualifying judging period.

Dreams won the Judges’ Choice award, a new category designed to recognise an element of an entry that warranted particular merit, with the national beds retailer winning for the Replace Every Eight campaign, which has brought benefits not just to Dreams but across the industry.

Runner-up awards were also given to Steinhoff UK Bedding, Bensons for Beds, Sound Sleep and John Cotton Nonwoven division across the four principal categories.
