Shoppers went gadget crazy at John Lewis last week as customers made the most of the department store retailer’s Black Friday deals.

The retail cooperative posted total sales up 22 per cent to £179.1m in the seven days to 29th November, marking the highest ever weekly take in the retailer’s 150-year history.

Online sales were up 42 per cent, while John Lewis said Black Friday — the US post-Thanksgiving sales phenomenon that has taken hold among UK retailers — prompted strong demand for Electricals.

The category rocketed 41 per cent over the same week last year, with John Lewis selling twice as many tablets and computers (+127pc), TVs (+131pc) and Small Electricals (+66pc).

Home didn’t quite capture the same attention — rising only 3.6 per cent against 2013 — but Furniture was still up 15.5 per cent and Lighting by 10.2 per cent, John Lewis said.
