Swedish home furnishings giant IKEA will open its first high street store with a small-format unit on Tottenham Court Road planned to launch this autumn.

The retailer will showcase a smaller range taking in kitchen and bedroom products according to The Times newspaper.

It didn't disclose which unit IKEA would take, but the former Multiyork store on the famous London shopping street has been vacant since the retailer collapsed late last year and is known to have big-ticket consents.

IKEA has been piloting smaller stores in recent years though these have so far centred on retail parks and shopping malls. A TCR unit would be its first on a high street, albeit unlikely any other high street in Britain, given its footfall and proliferation of home furnishings retailers.

Javier Quiñones, who succeeded Gillian Drakeford as retail manager for Ikea UK and Ireland earlier this summer, also wants to introduce quick-ship delivery for online orders.

The plan is to introduce next-day delivery across scores of IKEA products.
