Tapi, the new carpet and flooring chain from Martin Harris — son of Carpetright founder Lord Harris — promises to be one of the businesses to watch closely over the next few months.

Its first store opened last week in Tooting with two more to follow quickly in East Anglia ahead of a national roll-out that could see it eventually have around 200 stores.

It is well capitalised and boasts an experienced management team. It is also launching into a market with only one dominant retailer, Carpetright, though the might of Headlam’s wholesale business means independent retailers — including one-man-band fitters — remain a formidable and well-backed force.

It is common to see the second generation taking on the family business in the furniture and floorcoverings industries; but much rarer to see it happen in a startup scenario, outside of the original business. We’ll be following Tapi’s fortunes with interest.
