Furniture firms placed big orders beefing up production last year, to be the benefit of one of Europe’s largest machinery manufacturers.

Homag group said its UK division grew turnover by 83 per cent to more than £33m last year, a cash rise of more than £15m, while its machine order intake climbed 55 per cent putting it in line to repeat the trick this year.

The German firm makes and supplies woodworking equipment for panel production, sawing, sizing and edge-banding and CNC machinery. It trebled its UK profits to nearly £1m.

The company yesterday announced Pekka Paasivaara as its new CEO, completing its integration into the Dürr AG group that acquired Homag eight months ago. Dürr AG CFO Ralph Heuwing is to become Homag chairman.
