Retail sales went with the form book in June as the World Cup and sunshine boosted food, drink and TV sales but left furniture retailers cold.


Retail sales advanced 1.1 percent on a like-for-like basis last month according to the BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor. Total sales advanced 2.3 percent against June 2017.

Furniture joined a raft of non-food categories reporting declines according to the retail trade association and survey sponsor KPMG.

The consultancy's head of retail Paul Martin said: "Grocers benefited from the brighter weather and of course the World Cup, with barbecues and picnics firmly on the menu, and the weather and holiday season are also likely to be behind the uptick in online fashion sales too.

"But with so much attention outdoors, other household categories didn’t fare exceptionally well."
