Food and drink shoppers were out in force last month
July retail sales advanced thanks to higher food and drink sales as Brits enjoyed the weather and World Cup. Non-food categories wilted in the heat.

 

Total sales rose 1.6 percent last month according to the British Retail Consortium's monthly trade survey of retailers, with like-for-like sales — looking only at stores open this time last year — up 0.5 percent.


"Food and drink fuelled the majority of sales growth thanks to summer BBQs, picnics and football festivities," said Paul Martin, UK head of retail at survey sponsor KPMG.


"Elsewhere, growth was mainly witnessed among the holiday essential categories, including health and beauty, deck chairs and fashion."


Food and drink sales were up 4.5 percent year-on-year, the highest July sales growth for the category in five years, with non-food sales falling 1.0 percent.
