Shoppers stayed away from big-ticket shopping destinations over the Bank Holiday weekend, according to a leading retail research consultancy.


Figures from Springboard — which partners stores group the British Retail Consortium for its monthly footfall monitor — said retail park footfall was down 4.2 per cent against the same weekend a year ago.


Over the extended weekend, Bank Holiday Monday fared poorest of all with shopper numbers down 13 per cent on last year.


Shopping centres saw a 3.1 per cent decline over the weekend while high streets — buoyed by towns in coastal locations — were up 4.4 per cent over the three-day period.
