Furniture stores in Ireland enjoyed robust growth in April, a month in which higher car sales drove an overall retail uplift.


Sales volumes of furniture and lighting were up 6.7 per cent year-on-year, according to the Central Statistics Office, though only by 2.4 per cent in terms of value, reflecting category price deflation.


Overall retail sales volumes in Ireland climbed just under 12 per cent (+8.3pc by value) though the volume figure drops to +7.8 per cent if motor trades are excluded.


Motor trades — just under half of which is represented by new car sales — were up 26 per cent by volume last month, the CSO said.
