Black Friday demand for electricals helped retailers to their strongest year-on-year sales performance in three months in November.

The British Retail Consortium’s Retail Sales Monitor recorded 2.2 per cent growth on last year, with sales up 0.9 per cent on a same-store basis.

Furniture and other Home categories enjoyed another strong month, the BRC said, but Black Friday demand online and in store for TVs and household appliances put Electricals top of the pile.

Director-General Helen Dickinson said the November sales story wasn’t dominated solely by discounting. “Customers also bought full priced items and showed interest in premium ranges — particularly in food — and retailers who didn't discount for Black Friday also saw increased sales,” she said.
