Prices at the furniture factory gate climbed 20 basis points last month with a 1.4 per cent rise in the year to June.

The figure — from the Office for National Statistics producer price index series — compares with 1.2 per cent to May, and is the highest figure since last November (+1.5pc).

Overall factory gate price inflation across all manufactured goods fell 1.5 per cent in June, narrowing from the 1.6 per cent fall in the year to May 2015.

The overall price of materials and fuels bought by UK manufacturers fell 12.6 per cent last month, widening from the 12.3 per cent drop to May. Excluding more volatile products — including petroleum — the drop is much less severe, at 4 per cent in the year to June.
