philGreenBHSTakeover interest in furniture-to-fashion business BHS has prompted its owner Sir Philip Green to consider selling the retail chain, according to press reports.

Sir Philip — owner of the Arcadia group that also includes Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins, Wallis and Miss Selfridge — is open to selling after receiving approaches from serious suitors prepared to meet his asking price, The Sunday Times reported.

He acquired BHS for £200m 15 years in 2000. Is it not clear how much he would be prepared to accept for the retail chain, and he wasn’t quoted in the Sunday Times story.

The 180-store chain, which employs more than 12,000 people, hasn’t been profitable since 2008, when it made £22m before tax on sales of £850m.

Accounts for the year to end August 2013 show the chain registered a loss of nearly £70m on sales of £676m, though that was an improvement on 2011–12, when it lost £116m.
