Belgian carpet imports into the UK are off double-digit so far this year but the overall total remains flat, after others made up the shortfall.

 

Britain imported £222.6 million of carpet between January and March 2018, up 0.1 percent compared to the first quarter of last year.


The figures would have been stronger but for a 6.5 percent decline in March, new HMRC data compiled by The Furnishing Report shows.


Belgian carpet makers have had a tough time in the UK, sending £68.7 million to Britain in the quarter, down 14 percent year-on-year.


Double-digit percentage increases from the Netherlands (£55.9m) and Turkey (£19.2m) helped make up the difference.
