The Benelux based carpet industry’s grip on the UK flooring market is weakening with British buyers looking to the East.

EU carpet and rug imports declined 2 per cent to £147.7m in the second quarter of 2015, according to HM Revenue & Customs data.

The drop was driven by a fall in the amount of carpet imported from the Netherlands, down 6.5 per cent to £49.3m. Belgian imports were slightly ahead on the second quarter of 2014.

Imports from further afield were up strongly, with non-EU carpet and rug imports up 9.6 per cent to £52.7m, with Turkey, China and India all seeing growth against last year.

Carpet exports out of Britain declined 12 per cent to £50.9m, with a drop in goods sent to the Netherlands (-36pc to £7.6m) the main drag on performance.
