Upholstery retailer Sofology is planning to open six new stores this year, bringing the chain to almost 40 shops by the end of 2016.

Chief executive Jason Tyldesley said the retailer, which has just completed rebranding its estate from its former name of Sofaworks (see related), would open the bulk of the new shops in the second half of this year.

“We are very particular on the units we take; they often have to be rebuilt or refaced in quite significant ways so the process can sometimes take a while with planning,” he told The Furnishing Report in a telephone interview.

“Our store portfolio is very strong in terms of the kind of properties we have. We will open the new ones as fast as we can, but we don’t just take any old mid-terrace unit like a lot of other retailers do.”

Six new stores would take Sofology to 39 stores by the end of 2016, building on the four it opened last year.

Mr Tyldesley added the retailer was looking “anywhere and everywhere” in order to find the right locations, though he didn’t specify any confirmed sites.

“We are definitely expanding further south, in the north east and we’ve got one in the Midlands. We are consolidating our delivery regions.”
