Growth returned at non-food wholesale group Stax Trade Centres in the year to end August with sales back above £100m.

The cash and carry firm operates five large branches — at Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol and Edinburgh — selling a diverse product range including an extensive cabinet furniture offer.

Sales climbed 8 per cent to a record £105.8m in 2013–14, bouncing back from a 2.8 per cent dip a year before when revenue was impacted by the administration of Liverpool DIY and furniture retailer Rapid Hardware.

Stax said operating profits were flat at around £1.5m, though a £3.1m impairment loss following a revaluation of its Manchester property meant it reported a deficit of £1.8m at the pre-tax line.
