New stores and online helped John Lewis creep past year-earlier figures as poor weather conditions impacted performance in the seven days to 17th January.

Total sales rose 1.1 per cent to £74.3m though only five out of 39 stores open over a year were up against the same week a year ago. Online sales rose 10.5 per cent year-on-year.

Home sales were up 3.9 per cent with some good performances from its new Fusion brand and floorcoverings, which climbed nearly a third.

Its its commentary, John Lewis said its final week of clearance had coincided with some disruptive weather with high winds at the beginning of the week and blizzard conditions in some areas towards the end.
