Beds helped sales climb last week at John Lewis, though the chain was reliant on the web to make up for a 2.6 per cent decline across its stores.


Total sales across the cooperative were up 3 per cent to £68.9m in the seven days to 24th January. Stores sales — including new space — declined to around £45.5m, while online was up 15.9 per cent to £23.4m.


Ten of its 39 stores open more than a year beat last year’s total.


With Home, John Lewis said beds and mattresses were up 30 per cent year-on-year while its Fusion collection showed ‘great promise’ according to head of retail chain Mark Blundell.
