The addition of a seventh store boosted sales by nearly a fifth at large regional non-food retailer Charlies in the year to end July.

Sales climbed 18 per cent to £36.8m — boosted by the 2013 opening of its latest store, in Carmarthen — as well as 6 per cent like-for-like growth in existing shops.

Privately owned Charlies sells online and via large format superstores at Aberystwyth, Queensferry, Shrewsbury, Welshpool and Newtown.

Its general merchandise offer includes a sizeable collection on inexpensive home and furniture lines. Pre-tax profits grew by 36 per cent to £1.2m.
