InflationMar25Furniture retail price inflation has slipped below zero in eight of the past 18 months but February’s fall was the steepest yet.


The consumer price index for furniture slipped to -2.1 per cent year-on-year last month, according to the Office for National Statistics.


February’s figure was well below the previous low of -1.2 per cent deflation recorded in November, and means furniture prices have fallen against year-earlier levels in four of the past five months.


The category was a major downward drag on overall CPI, which dropped to 0.0 per cent, from +0.3 per cent inflation in January.


Floorcoverings price inflation remain above zero, though the CPI figure for carpets and flooring did drop from 1.5 per cent in January to 0.5 per cent in February.
